What is the ADPCA?
The Association for the Development of the Person-Centered Approach (ADPCA) is an international network of individuals who support the development and application of the person-centered approach. ADPCA welcomes the participation of educators, therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, health service providers, pastoral counselors, organization development specialists, and all people who are interested in the field of human relations and personal and interpersonal development. In an endeavor to practice the person-centered approach within the Association, all members share the responsibilities and privileges of leadership.
The Association sponsors an annual conference, the distinctive features of which are large community group meetings, smaller therapeutic groups, and presentations by individuals of research related to the approach. It publishes a newsletter, a journal, and an annual membership directory. Membership benefits include subscriptions to those publications and participation in a community of individuals who share person-centered values. For more information see the following web sites: the ADPCA web site http://www.adpca.org and a Carl Rogers web site at http://www.carlrogers.info.
What is the Person Centered Approach and how does it relate to Client Centered Therapy?
The Person-Centered Approach can be understood as an evolution in Client-Centered Therapy as originated by the well-known American psychologist Carl Rogers. Rogers’s form of psychotherapy, known as Client-Centered Therapy, is expressed through three core conditions: unconditional positive regard, empathy, and congruence. The expression of these core conditions, in combination with “non-directive” interaction, can be understood as the fundamental force that can facilitate each individuals “actualizing tendency.” The Person-Centered Approach attempts to expand upon Client-Centered Therapy by extending the range of the application of the core conditions and non-directivity to individuals and groups outside of the psychotherapy practice.
Why should I Attend the 2007 ADPCA Conference in New York City?
ADPCA conferences are unique experiences compared to other mental health related conferences because they encompass both professional activities and personal growth. Therefore, in addition to presentations and other professional discussions, the ADPCA 2007 conference will include: community meetings where every participant is free to take part in large encounter group type experiences, small groups where more intimate exchanges occur, business meetings that allow every participant to have an equal opportunity to take part in and influence the planning of ADPCA activities, as well as other gatherings that range from an opening night party to the closing night talent show. Therefore, the ADPCA 2007 conference will focus on professional and personal/relational growth in an environment where equality for all participants is held as fundamental.
